Welcome to St Clair Shetland Cattle

Tracy St Clair Pearce.

After reading an article on Shetland animals,
l was amazed several types came from the island, the Shetland pony, cows, pigs,
geese, ducks, chickens and dogs.

Obviously the Shetland pony, which l already had, was in great demand as a pit pony therefore had a health number much the same as the Shetland Sheepdog.

The pig was less fortunate as the last of this medium sized, patched pig was eaten during the last World War.

The Geese , Ducks and Chickens were extremely rare with difficulty in breeding on, leaving the sheep who could be increased in numbers pretty quickly and have been, to the Shetland Cow who needed more dedicated long term breeders.

So since they needed help l decided to obtain my first heifer 'Nelly' who was bought in Leeds in 1989 as a little lady who changed my life, such character, with only 67 breeding cows stated by the RBST listing, 'Nelly' went back to Leeds to be mated.

This is how it started, l saw another pretty heifer 'Pale' and ordered my own bull. Within a few years l had collected several old cows from around the country and with new bulls and with breeding had 20 to 40 in my herd.

At one time l was considered the largest private breeding herd in the country, now l keep about 20 including youngsters and have always bred more for temperament and pretty markings.

l am a life member and supporter of the Shetland Cattle Herd Book Society on the Shetland Isles and the newer Shetland Cattle Breeders Association on the English mainland.

Due to my health problems getting worse please refer any enquiries to my younger brother on flippearce@aol.com or Mike Sandison or Mary Knibbs for stock information. Tracy
